rusty sand

I have this rust colored stuff all over my sand bed. It disappears when the lights go out, because it isn't there first thing in th AM when the lights come on. However after about an hour or two it starts to show up faintly and by the end of the day it almost covers all the sand. I don't really know what it is and I know less about how to get rid of it.

I know blue leg hermits do not have the best reputation with alot of people, but in my experience they eat diatoms like there's no tomorrow. I went with a dsb as well and was covered with diatoms. I bought 10 blue legged hermits, put them in the tank and the first thing they started eating was the diatoms.
