How long have you had him? What sized tank is he in? What does he eat? What are the water reading in the tank? HLLE comes from deficiencies or water quality. That deficiency is usually nutritional. It can also be from constant stress and inadequate environment. HLLE can also be taken care of by rectifying whatever the situation is that is causing it.

He is only an inch after six months? I have never even seen them for sale that small. What does he eat?

Is the formula one frozen, pellets, or flakes? 2.5 inches sounds about right. Are you adding any vitamins to his food?

Pick up a couple of different frozen formula foods or make your own. Beth has a recipe in her Common Treatments FAQ at the top of this forum. Also buy some Zoecon or Selcon and a vitamin C supplement. Rotate between the different foods and vitamins. Do you have plans to upgrade your tank size? This fish grows large and will continue to have health issues as he matures in a 55.

ill try to get some of the suppliments today
They really do help a lot. The frozen foods are also a lot healthier for the fish. The formula foods are best because they contain a variety of ingredients which gives them a balanced diet. Of the vitamins I mentioned Zoecon or Selcon are the most important. See which one the store has. These contain fatty acids needed to heal the HLLE.

ive got issues with this too on a sailfin and a foxface..been fighting it for awhile and havent found the solution. they are getting mysis, brine, will eat some homemade food, formula1, marine cuisine...im dosing C now but havent seen improvement yet. none of the LFS carry the big supplements mentioned on this site and the one that carries Kent C id have to take a loan out to get some so i ordered it...
i assume the scaring can be permanent? that may be the case at this point.. but i want to figure it out as a i have a hippo getting ready to go into the tank...

Selcon and zoecon can be ordered online if your stores don't carry it. The marks are not permanent. I have seen fish on here that are a whole lot worse off (ask Renogaw about his Kole) that made a full recovery. It is important to get away from the flakes, brine, and mysis and get some real nutrition into them.

then what?

Frozen formula foods or make your own. Frozen foods have a mixture of raw meats and algae. Each one contains 8-10 different ingredients such as squid, scallop, clam, spirulina etc. It is so much better for your fish.
