i wouldnt acclimate a new fish at higher levels if they came from zero. I wouldnt stress if they built up after I had my fish

well i asked a question in the fish only section about why there up. i had a hair algea outbreak and have had my lights of for a month i was wondering if the dying algea could be realesing the nitrates out amd thats why there so high??.never had this prob. before what do you think crypt

how old is the tank? Turning off the lights for a month wont help. The algae will come back once they are on. Do you use RO water or Tap water?

have you tested your phosphate or alk levels? Try getting an emerald crab or large turbo snails. They should mow it down. How long were you keeping your lights on during the day? what salt are you using?

i dont test for phosphate or alk. i have 3 emerald crabs and had 30 turbo snails prolly down to 10-15 i run my actinics for 10hrs and daylight for 8 and im using instant ocean reef crystals

well high trates and high phosphates probably caused your algae bloom. Running the lights for more than 8 - 9 hours a day helped as well. Im going to assume you dont have great flow in the tank? How many power heads and the rating are they? What is your return pump rated at? Try switching salts. I used to use Instant Ocean. I switched to oceanic and will never look back. Mixes better and my fish only tanks thrive on it. I have great coraline growth with it as well. This wont cure the algae but its better salt mix IMO.

im thinkin a 30gal water change, canister cleaned out and all new filters should lower trates to under 20 atleast and that tang should be happy

eehh i have 4000gph+ and you took the words right outta my mouth..ihave been wanting to switch to oceanic but its not sold locally i'd have to buy it online 200gal mix

Well check your phosphate levels. I would invest in a RO unit. It will save you money. I bought mine for $200 and it has already saved me that in past 3 months I have had it.
Personally the faster you can get rid of that canister filter you have the better. Those things are a trate nightmare. Set up a nice sized sump. Hell a 30 gallon with a good skimmer and fuge would do wonders for your tank.
In the mean time turn your lights back on for a few hours a day. Check your RO water from Wal mart. Test it for everything. How much live rock do you have?

yeah im getting a 5stage ro/di unit soon. im only using the canister for flow its filled with lr rubble.im actually getting a 225rr this weekend and im make a sump/fuge out of a 75g and getting a reef octopus 300 or 350 but it wont be setup till prolly august or sept.the 225 will take the place of the 120.oh and i have 300+lbs of lr in the 120 currently
