Stopped by my LFS today. Actually I saw their add on the net and it was on my way back from dropping off my daughter at school, so i thought I'd check it out.
The sale sign by the door said "Special 25% off all fish missing one or more eyes !!!" :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:
Yep, the fish looked as bad as the image that sign conjured. The coral, clams, anemones, and live rock were really great, go figure.

I was just commenting to the guy I deal with at my LFS today how the owner of the store charges the same amount for fish that are obviously sick, ammonia poisoned, in bad shape (fin, tail damage, missing eyes, etc) as he does for perfect specimens. Seems like he'd do better to discount them to move them.
Example: He had two mature sailfin tangs for sale, nearly identical size. One had HLLE so bad there was barely a recognizable face on the fish, I'm surprised he was alive. Additionally, he had bad fin rot. It had been taken from a neglected system. The other was perfect. Both fish: $99
At least this store was discounting them...

Yeah, having a fish missing an eye happens, but enough to warrant being the weekly special ? Fish get no respect. A petstore offering 25% off all 3 legged dogs would be shut down instantly.

Not to be argumentive or blindly back the LFS here, but we don't know if this is a one time deal or a periodic thing. For all we know they got a shipment of fish in that were missing eyes, or maybe a naive employee put a trigger into a community tank and he went straight for the eyes.
You guys are right, if it's a regular sale thing that's reprehensible, but if it's a one shot deal, I actually think it's kind of nice that he's taking what is likely a loss to get these animals a home rather than just exterminate them. Let's face it... who would pay full price for a blackbeard-fish?

I assumed it was an on going problem at the store because it was several diferent species, but even still it could have indeed been the shipper. Maybe it turned out that thier freight prices were lower because the ship to many in a bag. Good point.

That is way strange..... :scared:
Having said that, I admit that when I worked at an LFS, I would specifically buy deformed fish, because I took pity on them. They were naturally deformed for whatever reason. I knew they would ever be bought and I thought they deserved a shot. So my tank looked a bit odd, but at least the fish weren't in the store anymore.
