salifert test kits HELP plz

ok, i know i may not be the brightest person in the world, but these test kits make no sense to me!!
the directions say to get everyting into the test tube. ok, fine and dandy. everything is in the tube. now it says to look at the empty syringe. dugh? what am i missing here? it dosnt say to draw anything back into the syringe.

calcium right now, but i looked at the directions on the alk & its says the same thing

I have not used them I have a NH3, NO3, and NO2. Do you know if they are like them?

no i dont have those i have the ph and the 2 i mentioned, the ph is simple color matching
these other 2 dont have a color card, its making me nuts!!!
