Provided you're within acceptable range, it's more important to keep it consistent and measure accurately (i.e. w/ a refractometer) than where it's actually at, IMO.
That said, I keep mine at 1.025.

It's a horizontal line on the Refractometer's dual vertical scale. Which scale you use, Salinity or Specific Gravity, is immaterial. Pick a horizontal line and stick to it.

I have read that without an auto top off one would be safer in the 34ppt/1.024 range. Since the numbers will go up as water evaporates. I am in the process of adding my auto top off now. Filling the sump twice a day gets old fast.
