probably defense mechanism--got stuck somewhere and lost a limb instead of life. it will grow back with the next molt.
of course, if you have fish that are eating the crab then yes, you should be worried.

I'm hoping defense - we caused a bit of a raucous trying to get our 2 green chromis out to move them to their new home. I was also hoping it would grow back cuz that little guy does some killer work on our hair algae!!
and zeke - it's a crab :)

darn SLF's are the best cleaners i've ever seen. i had one hitch a ride on a snail crawling up the tank just so it could clean places it never got before.
what fish do you have?

a six line wrasse, yellow headed sleeper goby, cleaner wrasse (don't know how this thing is still alive!) a tru perc and a clown goby. i know they're not picking on the sally and my emeralds are too small to even consider challenging it.
the sally actually climbed our UV sterilizer and cleaned the sides of it and the back wall. cleaned all 6 of our snails, too!! i swear it can scale walls sometimes...

I had a sally light foot loose its two inner legs on both sides for no apparent reason one time. I just saw my nassarious dragging them under the sand. They came back... if I remember correctly.

The Sally Lightfoot is a very popular crab species for the home aquarium. They are very active crabs, picking at algae constantly. Their body is flat and brown in color. Both their body and legs are marked with yellow. The Sally Lightfoot is lighting quick and are voracious algae eaters. These crabs live along rocky shorelines in the Caribbean and vary in size depending on the season; sometimes not being available at all. Sally Lightfoots will often times lose some of their legs, but regenerate them quickly. These crabs love to work and are a great addition to any tank. More than one can be kept in the same aquarium.

sadly no pics at this time - he's pretty big tho! probably about 3-4 inches! i was nervous that he was going to pick on some of the little guys but so far so good. no corals in my tank (not sure i'm ready for that just yet) so nothing to worry about on that end. definitely a fiesty little thing! i'll try to get some pics of my gimpy sally tonite when i get out of work

you know, i had one for almost (maybe even over) a year. never did it touch my corals, and it actually cleaned around their bases. people say they can do this, but i've not read someone with actual experience with this.

I've had my Sally in a tank with Feather Dusters and Gorgs. She hasn't touched any of them.
She's fun to watch, always running around and trying to catch food when I feed the fish. She'll jump and occasionally do flips trying to catch floating goodies.
