I've heard and read conflicting information on these crabs as to whether they are reef safe or not? I know w/ any crab its sometimes a gamble but am interested in everyones opinions on them.

I would go to a fish store and watch them in action. They are lightning quick and could do alot of damage at any given time. When I watch them I just got a uneasy feeling that one of my poor fish would be lunch so I got rid of them.

Emerald crabs and "cleaner" hermit crabs are the safest. Remember that all crabs are opportunistic predators to some degree.

I have a sally lightfoot in my tank, and I caught it harassing my clown and RBTA the other day--so I decided it's probably not reef safe enough for my tastes. I've been trying to trap it, but it doesn't seem smart enough to find its way into the trap.

Ive NEVER had a problem with sally's and find them the most entertaining to watch along with arrow crabs, but take heed that they have different personalities and oportunistic as well.

i have one in my 55, very entertaining. a fish will swim by and it acts like its going to catch it.
i feed him a small silverside when i feed my anemone. otherwise overyone comes and steals the food from him.
he also tries to grab ahold of me when my hand is in there, so i gotta fend him off with a stick lol
