I woke up this morning to find my Sally Lightfoot caught in the powerhead I just moved. I quickly shut it off and he moved around so I knew he was still alive. He is moving about the tank pickin stuff of rocks like normal now so I assume hes ok.
I noticed he lost one of his front legs though. I think I remember reading before that crabs regenerate lost limbs but I can't seem to find anything in the search. Anybody want to say yea or no on this one?

hell regenerate it when he molts.
he might be in trouble if its a feeding claw (i dont have one so i dont know their exact anatomy) but if you saw if eating / picking at things itll probably be fine.

no its one of his legs is claws are still intact. He does seem to have a bit of trouble climbing without it but he seems to be eating fine otherwise. Hopefully he molts soon. Its been a couple months since his last one and normally he does it every other month or so. I thought I remember reading that they did but I couldn't remember.

you know, everyone says crabs regenerate their lost limbs, but i have a emerald crab that i call gimpy because he only has one forclaw and has molted twice in a month and a half and not grown it back.

Ditto Reno...
I had Lefty ( an emerald crab) for about a year and he never regrew his right claw. But it didnt slow him down any either.

We were talkin bout legs though not claws. Maybe they can't do the claws. Who knows. Well I haven't seen it since Monday and today I found what is either a dead crab or a molt but judging by the fact that he hasn't came out for feeding time in 2 days he must be dead. That sucks. He was one of the coolest things in the tank

he has never hid for more than a couple hours any other time he has molted though. Hes a very fearless social crab. If a fish comes to close he bats them away with his legs. I will watch but he has never missed dinnertime before so things don't look good for him.

Man I had a Sally who had ALL of its legs ripped off by a fish. All it had were its claws. But one day I came in and there it was, with all legs working in fine order. For a moment I wondered if another crab had crawled into my tank.
They will grow back, I sure.
Good luck man.

I would have to take down all my rockwork to grab the molts because they are against the back glass behind the rocks. I will just watch for him over the next week or so but my thoughts are that hes a gonner

hehe, yea its tough to get at them some time.
but, that's actually good news... if there was meat in there your clean up crew would have swarmed it, and broke it apart. i'm hopin for ya!

Trust me theres no hope left. It is all ripped apart now and still no sign of the crab that spends most its time out in the open.

it is probably just a molt most inverts hide after they molt because they feel vulnerable. so he is prob just hiding because he molted and he lost a leg .

You guys are way to hopeful. Hes dead....End of story....
Every other molt he has went through he has been out grazing the exact same day and hes been MIA for way too long to still be alive. He never misses feeding time molting or not and I haven't seen him.
