salt mixture

I was just wondering how much salt I need to add per gallon of water. Just trying to premix for tommorrows water change. I put my salt in a seperate container, and it has been awhile since I had to make some up. Instead of writing it down I told myself that I would remember. I'm using instant ocean. Would really appreciate the help.:help:

thanks for the help that will be a good place to start. I will remember to write that down. My has been 1.024 with a plastic hydr. How much different do you believe there is between the glass and plastic.

The bag should say how much salt to mix with water. I mix 1/2 cup for every gallon, and I get 1.023 doing so....just like the instructions say.

I have 3 plastic swing arms and they all read something different and that is when I went to glass hydrometer. Everyone I talked to said they were much more accurate then the swing arms. I would definately like to get a refractometer in the near futures.

No problem. I would look into getting a refractometer if you can afford it sometime. I dont have one yet for the obvious reason($$$), but if you plan on keeping your reef tank for a while, and fill it up with hundreds of $$$ of corals and inverts, you dont want them all to die cause your salinity gets to low or high.

Yes I agree! Its going to be awhile before I buy one. I have a friend that has a glass one, I don't know if this was the right way to do it or not, but I calculated mine off of his. I get the water the same on mine all the time, so (assuming mine runs half way true) salinity should be pretty close!! At least for now that is what i'm doing
