1) Adequate cleanup crew - critters like nassarius and turbo snails, emerald and hermit crabs, etc. Someone once told me one per gallon is a good average.
2) RODI water
3) Correct lighting spectrum
4) Check phosphates
5) Remove stuff in filter media which feed algae

My Lawnmower Blenny will feed off the glass but nothing like a plecostomus. Lots of snails and a mag float glass cleaner will do the trick. I try to keep the front as clean as possible and let the crew handle the rest.

Is a 29G big enough for a fighting conch?

Fighting Conchs are awesome for brown algae. I had it all over my sand and my conch ate it all really fast. I have mine in my 15 gallon tank, although he is really small... maybe a little more than an inch long. He is constantly grazing for algae though.
