I am preparing water for water change. I don't have a second heater yet. So I add my water at room temp. I will be getting a heater soon. My question is, if I test the salt at a cool tempature and then warmer. Will it give me different results?

i cant see why it would affect salt .... the warmer it is doesnt affect the salt content right?

yes actually it will be different , u need to test it at the temp your tank is for it to be acurate

Doesn't a refractometer adjust for temperature?

it depends on what you are using to test the salt...hydro or refract...most refracts have automatic temperature adjusts that give accurate results no matter the temp....some hydros have it too..but if you are using a basic hydro let it get to your tank temp first

Temp. of water does effect the S. G. ( density ) but not the salinity ( ppm )
A rise in temp. will cause the S. G. to drop,
A drop in temp. will cause the S. G. rise.
Should always adjust new water Temp. to main tank first, then adjust S.G. to main tank befor adding the new water.

even then you are relying on your equipment to compensate for something you can control, I wouldnt believe either till the temp was accurate, What if the water is WAY cooler or warmer, how much can your refrec. or hydro. adjust? .........just get a heater
