Can Anyone tell me of their experience with plant life that they have addded to their reef tank? What kinds? and how long do they live? or last ?as my fish and sea urchins eat mine:rolleyes:

I had some shaving brushes in my 100gal reef, but my dang golden-headed sleeper goby destroyed them... lol I have a few shoots of halimeda in my 200gal grouper tank that stay well-trimmed, but nothing other than that.

The reason that I don't keep saltwater plants (caulerpa, seaweed, etc.) is because I have herbavore fish in my tank. I tried putting some caulerpa in my tank once, and it was gone in an hour, eaten by the tang.
Yes, I have stupid written on my forehead.

I have some halimeda in my tank that for the most part, the fish leave alone. I have a purple tang and and brown tang in there. They pick at it a little, but it grows slowly bigger. I had some grape caulerpa in also that the tangs left alone, but I pulled it out because they are so fast growing. I'll leave the caulerpa for t he refugium.

We have a lot of caulerpa that grows in the corner of our reef tank, wrapped around some Roman columns (porcelain decoration). It grows like a weed, well, it is a weed, anyway, great look, and helps keep other algae at bay. Our scopus tang hits it every once in a while, but he can't keep up with it. We tried shaving brushes once, didn't last a week.

I have halimeda in the tank for looks and caulerpa in the refugium to help control ammonia and trates. It does grow like a weed so I prune it and feed the prunings to the tangs. Fish seem to leave the halimeda alone. It does grow very slowly which is a plus in my book. HTH
