There was a new guy at one of the LFS I frequently visit and when he was asked a question that he was unsure about he would always go pick up a book instead of trying to guess his way through the answer.
I have a lot of respect for the guy for doing that.
One of the best ways to learn is from reading. If you are looking for information on some of the more common questions in the hobby cruise this message board or pick up a reference or handbook as they are sometimes called. These books often contain the basics and are a good place to start.
Good luck with the new job.

I think you just asked your first/best question. Like someone said before, if you don't know, don't guess. While the customer may first seem frustrated, he/she will value your answers in the future.
Good Luck!
By the way, the best book I found was "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist" by Robert Fuller. Practicle and well organized.

Barnes and Noble and Borders bookstore is a good place to start, fish magazines and books are great tools--jake

Thank you for atleast trying to learn. There are so many differences between salt water and fresh water fish keeping and so much more you can put in a reef tank. This truly is the place to start. Go into the FAQ topics and read all you can. Also .... if you can't find the answer you can direct the customer to this site so they can ask their own questions.
Good luck with your new job....in a way I envy you, you get to learn in someone elses tank.
People spend alot of money in saltwater...help them not waste it and you will do okay!
