Saltwater to freshwater tank.

Can you use a sump for a freshwater tank? Do you need more filtration for a freshwater tank than just a sump?

Yes, you can use a sump for a freshwater aquarium just like you would a saltwater aquarium. Although it's not seen as much doesnt mean it isn't useful or viable. Although a sump's extra water volume is a nice contribution you still need some type of filtration for the aquarium itself, having a sump will just make it so all the filtration and heating is hidden from view in the main tank.

You can use a sump - but if you are going to have a planted aquarium, overflows strip the water of available CO2, so I wouldn't recommend it for planted tanks.
If it's just fish only - sure, go for it. Also - you can't use your skimmer. No salt - no surface tension.
