Well my samsung 3yrs old 56" DLP after great picture and sound, EXPLODED! So after contacting SAMSUNG they said that it might be the DLP BULB, SO I ordered a bulb from SAMSUNG at $200 plus shipping. I am savy enough to get back there, take the old one out and replace it with the new one. So I go to turn the TV ON... NOTHING, NADA! I am so pissed.. SO I call SAMSUNG and they are telling me then it is a problem with the light engine and that the L.E. unit costs about $1000 not including shipping and then installation so we are looking at around $1500 total.. DAMN, Im like wtf I might as well just get another set. So as a last ditch effort I called the place where I bought it from and asked then If they service TV'S and they told me yes and that they could send out a tech... So a few days later the tech comes out and gets in the back of the set.. inspects the bulb,, Thats NOT IT, Looks and takes out the LIGHT ENGINE UNIT... which is pretty much of a project, Takes it out and im expecting him to tell me I need a whole new unit, BUT upon further inspection, he takes it apart a little and there are GLASS fragments everywhere. Im like what the heck is that? He opens it up and the COLOR WHEEL is in a million pieces, I dont know exactly what a color wheel does but it is really important. So now he has to order a colorwheel from SAMSUNG.. $200 damage including shipping.. The guy just got here put in the NEW color wheel.. and VOILA TV good as new.. SO total damage $200 for the first DLP lamp which I will keep because I heard that they always take a crap. $60 for the first diagnosis service call, $200 for the new color wheel and $200 installation about 40 minutes..= $660 vs the $1500 for the NEW LIGHT ENGINE.. for a 3yr old set.. I THINK? I got off pretty good vs buying a whole new set... BUT I am STILL an advocate of SAMSUNG DLP sets!

The color wheel is exactly what it sounds like. It consists of red, green, blue, and sometimes white (clear) filters. This wheel spins between the lamp and the DLP chip and alternates the color of the light hitting the chip from red to green to blue. The mirrors tilt away from or into the lens path based upon how much of each color is required for each pixel at any given moment in time. This activity modulates the light and produces the image that is projected onto the screen.
With the new bulb, the TV should provide years of service.

Aqua, so knowledgeable! You must be in the biz or something! So with a new Color Wheel and DLP bulb.. I hope ill be ok! I just hope the LIGHT ENGINE itself doesnt take a crap! But with HD.. what a brilliant picture these sets have.

You are lucky to have a reputable dealer.
I have a Toshiba DLP. Lamp went out after 6 months which was a common problem with the units at that time. The friggin place I bought it from didn't even stock the part. I ordered a lamp online out of florida for about half price. The place I bought the set from got me a new lamp under warranty but it took them 10 days to get it in. When I ordered it the chick that played service manager tried to shove a service call down my throat when I called originally. She claimed the lamp usually blew the ballast as well. As a member of homethreaterspot dot com I was lucky enough to have read several posts from people with the same model TV who had lamps blow so I knew it was BS. What really POed me was when my wife went to pick up the lamp (I alread had the one I ordered on line in the set and working) This woman tryed to strong arm her into having a service call as well. She actually told the wife that she could only have the lamp replaced by an authorized service tech to avoid liability issues. HELLO, Toshiba lists the lamp as a customer replacable item
After the wife pointed that out the woman then said if the ballast was bad it would burn out the new lamp.
Didn't want to take no for an answer.

Just an informed customer
. The technlogy (nano-tech) behind DLPs are just amazing.
If any is interested in DLPs they are beginning to switch to LEDs which does away with the bulb and color-wheel. That also allows them to build 'slim-sets' which aren't any deeper then LCD TVs.

If its making the sound like a leaf blower its 2 things, either LAMP or Color wheel.. My picture NOW is fantastic, like new! The only time you have to worry about focus or picture is when you replace the light engine.. then i heard sometimes it takes some tweaking!

We have a 43 in toshiba rear projection that the color has almost gone on. Its in strips of yellow, blue and red. Could it be the color wheel or fan?? Its in my bedroom so no hurry to replace, but its nice to watch tv without the kids.

Sounds like a regular rear projection tv.Not really even worth fixing probly cost more then just buying a new one if it is 8 yrs old.I don't think dlp have been around that long.

I am sure you are right, I was hoping it would be something simple, I hate to spend money on a new set for the bedroom.

Yea, IIRC DLPs first hit the market some circa 2001 (at least at major outlets).
As far as your TV Teresa, there is a way to adjust convergence (sounds like the problem). You will have to consult your manual on instruction though. Probably buried somewhere in the Menu. If not, yea, you'd have to have a professional take a look at it. CRT projections aren't fun for the average home user to tinker with. However, it might be worth a look. The average replacement cost for a new convergence amp (typical Toshiba repair) is only about $200.
