I went to school over the hill from San Jose...in Santa Cruz. A 20 minute drive when there's no traffic. 1+ hours during rush hour. Still....worth the drive...great beach town, and great boardwalk. Really cool outdoor mall, too....totally 60's feel to it with street performers, etc. Also, you could make the 1.5 hour drive to the Monterey Peninsula (Carmel, Pebble Beach, Monterey). You could go out to 17 mile drive and watch the otters.... or to the aquarium there....one of the best in the world.
My absolute favorite spot on the planet is just a mile south of Carmel on Hwy 1: a state park called Point Lobos State preserve. Hands-down the most drop-dead gorgeous place you've ever seen....It's like Hawaii with cypress trees...whales within 200 yards of the shore (seasonal, of course)...otters everywhere...beautiful coves and hiking trails...trust me....
I lived in Santa Cruz for 6 years and Carmel for 7...great places to visit.
If you're looking for more info...let me know.
Here's a Pt. Lobos pic from their official www site:

Hey, thank you very much for the feedback. The Aquarium is definately on my list for Saturday (17th), I'll definately hit the park now as well. Looks fantastic.

How much time do you have to spend? There is a really nice LFS over in the area, with a really knowledgable owner. He's got a very interesting filtration setup, worth stopping in and taking a look. It's been a while since I've been, but I could probably get the address from a freind.
There are also a couple of fish wholesalers/imports that you could probably check out as well.

WEhat are you looking to do Guy? I've lived here my whole life. If its things fishy, I would head the Monterey Bay Aquarium as already stated. Not much reef stuff, but awesom local species. The tidepools at Fitzgerald Marine reserve in Half moon bay is good. its about an hour north of san jose.
The night life is ok if you want to hit bars and clubs.
Great place for Asian and Mexican food.
You going here on a business trip? You wanna bring anything with you that I can buy? I wanted some of those mysis that I never got around too and I forget what else.

So you are just south of San jose. For evenings, i would definatly go to San Jose for nightlife or food. Theres really nothing in Boulder Creek. Too bad you just missed the coral reef movie at the domed IMAX theater.

I grew up in San Jose. First on the east side and then up north a mile from Milpitas. San Jose was rockin! Santa Cruz was a blast every summer.

Just wanted to say I am jealous, a good friend of mine just got a job at the Monterey bay Aquarium, we worked together at the KC Zoo. I am itching to go visit her, and see the aquarium of course (and fill out an application lol).
