my tank has been up and running for over a year, now there is places in the sand bed that is getting low, can i add sand? if so how do i go about doing it without causing anything bad to happen?

Slowly add sand. You don't want to bury your bed too quickly. I would add no more than 1/4 an inch a week or so.
Use a pvc pipe and a funnel. Stick the pipe down to the sandbed, place funnel on end out of tank, and pour sand...
