sand beds?

The "norm" seems to be 4 to 6 inches.....a ugf i doubt would work unless you have reverse flow on it to push matters up

Not an expert, but from what I have read here and been told, undergravel filters are not recommended. Not sure about the sand bed depth.
 
mine is 5 ", I mean my DSB of corse. and no reason for the undergravel filter. That is a fresh water approach not something that should be used in a salt tank.

I ask because I had read that anaerobic bacteria could cause buildup of toxic gases below the sand bed that can be released when the sand bed is disturbed. Why would an under sand filter be a bad idea?
