sand care

I read that you don't siphon the sand bed per Dr. Schimek,as to not upset the creatures in the sand bed, but I also read on this BB that you do when you do a water change. Please all experienced fish keepers give me your expert thoughts on the subject.
Thank you.

It would depend on what type of setup you have. If you are running a DSB than you follow Dr. Ron's advise. However, if you have a FO tank you can do some surface cleanup. Substrate should not be too disturbed, however, as the substrate is a primary natural filter and disturbing it too much will distrupt the biological filtration.

The best way to naturally turn your sand is to get a sand sifting starfish.....I think you'll be really happy with that.
