Sand Cleaning & Maintenance

Any recommendations on cleaning/maintaining the sand located on the bottom of my reef tank. I notice that after a while, either algae and some left over debris accumulate on the top surface of the sand. I manually clear things up by using a long stick to move the sand around. Any help/advice/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Nass. snails are the best to clean the sand bed, my is pure white , they keep it clean.
