A while back I did a water change siphoning the sand in the 225G....Mostly did the center
Tonight I did the left and right side.....also water change #2 with the nwe tropic Marin Pro salt
I sure hope this helps....the sand was beginning to get brown on top again :(

siphoning the sand...... I cringe. you must be having serious problem to decimate your micro fauna populations like that. what prompted this?

Wow I second this thought...not putzing with vacuuming the sand was always one of the greatest joys for going saltwater. I had brown sand, and purchased a new CUC for the 90g...it's been awhile since I replenished the CUC so I got some more. I just added them day before yesterday...the sand is already showing improvement. Hermits love the brown stuff.

Some good reading was sent my way to lead me to believe that it was a good idea to do this.......This is not something that will be done often...or probably not again
maybe the person what gave me the reads.....could post them here

I don't know what you guys are "watching" for
I did not have a lot of time this morning...so I will add this
I was getting brown "stuff" covering my sand daily......I did add cuc...and many snails died....I did MANY things to maintain good water and parameters.....still got all the brown.....had a discussion with someone who provided me with some interesting reading on the benefits of cleaning your sand periodically.....at this time I felt it was worth a shot.......I have a 4" sand bed. The 1st time I only did front center of tank. That was a couple of months ago......this time I did the front left and front right of the tank.....
I will see if I can find the info that was sent to me.......
p.s......I have also boycotted hermits from my tank

I know what you mean about hermits, I caved and got some for the 90g. I was going to go all snails too, but the sand looks bad, I just added 50 of them. I don't want to get a sandsifter or anything else that will deplete whatever lives in the sand.
What good are you expecting the new salt mix to do for you? I know your corals are doing great, are you hoping for even better improvement?

I do this periodically to the 'horse tank as well. Usually it's the back corners that get the buildup of accumulated cyano and schmutz. It's a bummer, knowing I'm sucking out a portion of the microfauna, but sometimes ya just gotta do it.

Agree....Some very good articles on the maintenance of sandbeds.....The thought or assumption that people believe they will self maintain themselves......

I have surface siphoned mine usually I just stir them to kick out detritus when doing water changes that way I get the crud and not the micro fauna. I understand the need for sand bed maintinence fairly well I guess. I was just hoping that meowzer would elaborate on the reasons and results to expand peoples knowledge as to the whats and whys.
