Check your local beach code I do not know of any state where it is legal to take live sand dollars out of the ocean

i know in floriday you can go out and pick live sand dollars out of the water....now im not sure it is legal but they do have guides that will take you places to dive for them?

Well you need to call your fish and game and the answer is it is NOT illegal to harvest live sand dollars in florida......with all due respect

It is illegal to take any "live" shells from any Florida beach. "Live" shells are those in which a creature lives, whether the occupant is the original "owner" or not. So if any critter is visible, gently place the shell back in the sand.
This applies to sand dollars and starfish, as well. If you pick up either a sand dollar or a starfish, turn it over and very, very gently run your finger across its alveolae, or tiny "tentacles". If these "tentacles" move at all on their own, the starfish or sand dollar is still alive, and you should gently place it back in the surf.
where in florida do you live I would like to personally check their codes

It is unwise to do so, IMO. Most people will not be able to provide for them long term. Some species have particular particle size requirements - even requirements for silicious versus calcareous sand. They need enough sand to be able to burrow at an angle. I generally strongly discourage keeping them in any tank. IMO, most will die in our tanks.
FWIW there appear to be several areas where "live shelling" in Florida is, in fact, illegal. So you do definitely want to know what you are doing as this typically covers sand dollars as well.

I have seen sand dollars on a certain site for sale....not sure where they get them though.
The only sand dollars I have ever seen for sale were taken illegally and then farmed, that may be a loop hole in the law as far as selling but shelling sand dollors i still believe is not allowed
