Planning on starting up a 20g nano. Already have a reefer around me thats going to sell me LR for 1.50$ a lb.
I have some what im sure is dead sand now from when i added live sand to my 35g hex.
He said i could get some of his sand from his tank when i pick up the rock.
Is this a ok idea?

How much sand from the guys tank are you planning to add to yours???
USUALLY when you seed a tank....I have read....to add a cupful.....do you have any clue what could be stirred up...or entered into your tank with this persons sand???

i guess in a sense i wasnt looking to use his sand to seed mine, instead using it to just make a thicker sand bed. I have read a few threads about people getting sand from someone else's tank but there was really no deffinitive answer.
the live rock ill be getting will seed the sand if it is infact no longer alive.

I started my tank with used sand and used water for that matter. although I had no fish or anything in there when I started it up. I really only had a few rocks. I ended up having major red slime algea issues and it took me a while to get that cleaned up. I would say its a risk for sure. If your tank is already set up with fish in it then I would say just use your clean "dead" sand and just get a cup of his live sand to seed yours with. I agree with meowzer especially with my experience with this.

Why does everyone always suggest...when moving a tank....you use new sand then?
I know my tank is clean and all that....
That's why I was hoping for more input...to understand that

thats what im wondering, mines not even going to have livestock. I know you can stir up some stuff that will create spikes in the water, but since there is going to be no livestock for 3-4 weeks or whenever my cycle ends, it shouldnt really matter?

I've never really heard that but my guess is when you move and take all your sand out you stir everything up and kill alot of beneficial bac.
.but if your gonna re-cycle your tank when its at its new location you wouldn't have anything to worry about.Thats kinda funny to buy all new sand because its still gonna have a spike when you get it in right?waste of money if you ask me
