Sand....idea someone put into my head

I live right by the ocean. Now i know you just cannot go and take sand from a beach and put it in a tank but what i heard a friend of mine say was that they took sand and boiled it to kill off critters and "clean" it off. Bad advice or good advice? The cheapskate in me knows no bounds <img src="graemlins//urrr.gif" border="0" alt="[urrr]" /> . Anyways thought it was worth asking. I agree with Beth,why even bother then getting that sand in the first place. The only sand that might be ok would be from about 10 miles offshore where it should be clean from pollutants.other than that dont even bother. Also it may be illegal to do this in your area.
