sand in bulk?

me and a friend just got new aquariums and were both interested in a DSB, he has a 150 gallon tank and i have a 75. I figure the sand will be pretty expensive. We are in ohio and have no southdown (that i know of) near by.
The question is has anyone ever called a sand /gravel place from the yellow pages. I know its stuff normally used for landscaping, but if there was a certain type i could ask for it would help. I am broke but i would really like to start off with a dsb in my new setup.
if anyone has any creative ideas i'd appreciate them
thanks

Hi Matt,
You could get a few others and take a drive to someplace that has Southdown.
Other than that this really isn't a hobby for someone that's broke before they start a tank. Most of us are broke after we startup ;)

No Southdown in CT that I have found yet...wonder what part of the NE people are referring to.
The person is broke prior to starting...wonder what they will be after? :)
I was financially balanced before I started...now just poor...

i found out that the erie pa home depot carries southdown. That's about a solid 2 hours from akron, oh (where i live). It would probably be worth the trip. Although the lady i spoke to wasnt' 100%sure that they had some in stock at that moment. I'll have to make sure.
So if akron, oh is close to anyone and they want some southdown just let me know. You can reply here or write me at mvogel2@yahoo.com
the more the better.

cant you order from home depots website and have it shipped. I used quikcrete in my tank and it worked fine.

if you had it shipped across country... i think UPS's rate on 50 lbs is $45.

Hey Kip check that site I posted they are cheaper for you east coast folks, and they get the quotes to ya in about 15 minutes, they must have made a deal with the devil because their shipping rate is cheap. For me it breaks down to 2dollars a bag cheaper than my LFS.

If you don't mind a brownish sand, play sand from home depot will work fine and is around $3-4 for 50 pounds. Before going there I used to go to sand/gravel places and just get a boxfull. It worked also even though the people there looked at you kinda funny. they are used to dump trucks full sold by the ton, not just a box or too.

I found southdown in michigan @ home depot it was only 5.99 for 50#'s are you sure you can't find it at your local home depot. It was in the garden area.

yeah, all my local HD stores sell "best premium play sand" and the bags do not pass the vinegar test. Where are you in michigan? I'm only about 2 hours away from detroit, and in a month i'll be in clarkson for a concert, so i could always pick some up then.
thanks

i used the local HD stores "best premium play sand" ...
its 100% silicate, which can be used as an alternative... i would have gone with southdown since its aragonite or calcium based (not sure, but in eather case, better for the tank)....
but i have not had any problems with the tank.. i check for Si about every two or three weeks, and in the 5 months the tank has been running, no Si levels are detectable...

My HD does not have SD, nor could I find it on their site, so I found a guy in Nashville who ran me down 5 50 pound bags for $13.00 each. He drove almost 2 hours to me here in chattanooga to deliver 5 bags for $65.00. I dont know if he got it for free or what, but I could not pass it up. He told me he makes the trip once a month to do some shopping and making the money while he is here is a plus. Maybe you can find some one like that. :)
