Sand or Crushed Coral

I have an established aqurium that I have slowly tried to convert to a reef. I have recently gotten more serious and purchased quality lighting a RO / Di filter etc.
My aquarium currently has a crushed coral base and i have heard I should consider converting to sand. A big job for a 155 gallon tank. My question is is it really necessary and / or what are the advantages and or disadvantages?

Hi,
I also started out with crushed coral. It was a big job but I do really like the sand much better.
I have a sand sifter goby now and he keeps it real clean and white. The crushed coral always looked bad.

It is a big job and must be undertaken with care as to not crash your tank. The subject has been addressed extensively on the boards. I am sure if you search you will find vital information
