Sand questions, sharks/rays.

My questions are for any one with sharks and rays in larger systems.
How deep of a sand bed?
3-4"?
And where do you find the very fine sand?
The only sand I've been able to find is the basic sand that in my opinion is not very fine at all. Thicker than a fingernail.
So SWF.com sells 40lb bags of what looks like very fine sand, but I don't want to spend $2000 on sand if I don't have to...

And where do you find the very fine sand? My sand is the regular sand, and she is fine
