It basically eats "dirty" sand and poops out "clean" sand in little rice sized pellets

If you have crushed coral substrate forget it.. to large of pieces. IMO don't get one at all they will eat everthing you want to keep in you substrate , copepods,worms, and such....

Cucumbers do the same thing from what I have read up on them

as for cleaning the substrate, just get some nassarius snails, and a few blue leg hermits, don't stir or vacuum the substrate. if you have real good flow across the bottom of the tank you shouldn't have much waste collecting anyway..
