Sand under rocks?

There is sand under the rocks in the ocean so it seemed normal for the rock to be on the sand. So that's where our rocks are.:)

Could the weight of the rocks compact the sand under them so over time they become dead spots despite having critters in a DSB?

I obviously have too much free time at work :joy:
I've read that in some cases, since a major portion of the sand we use in the hobby is composed of calcium (especially those of us that have a deep sand bed of varying grain size) that over time it can clump and harden. As far as hardening from being compacted, that's a good question, but I guess that would depend on what type/size of critters you have working on your sand bed. If a large portion is being moved i would guess not (if you have some larger stars, bristle worms, or even fish constantly stirring the sand). Even if this is not the case i have never heard or read of this being a problem.

Not gonna happen! My hubbie has underlings and it just makes him busier. I think its that anal retentive gene, he doesn't delegate well, insists if you want it done right you have to do it yourself.

Hey Leopard_babe
The Michigan reefers have frag fests a couple of times a year over your way. Last one there were around 90 people trading and selling cheap frags of all types.
:) :) :)

What if I don't have any fragged corals, can I buy them?? Also, my mushrooms are huge, and look like they are starting to spred to the large piece of LR they are on. How do you frag a coral, is it hard? If they keep spreading can they take over your tank? How do you stop that??
Thanks for the help, just want to make sure I am doing everything right!!!

Folks would be more than happy to sell you a frag. At the last one I picked up a candy cane frag and a frogspawn frag for $10 each. Great way to cheaply expand your collection.
You have a very large wholesaler near you that opens on the weekend to the public. They have 18 - 3000 gallon tanks full of corals. email me if you don't know who I mean and want the addy.

I've given this site out before, it has a ton of info and some cool mpeg videos of cutting and propagating corals. www.garf.org. I've read you can just cut the head off of the mushrooms (run the scissors as far up the stem as possible and cut the head off, leaving a little stem attached). Then you can even cut the head into pie shaped pieces to make even more (dont cut thru the mouth). The original stem should grow a new head and all the pies should heal and grow into new mushrooms.
Hey Jblabs, do the MI reefers have a website? How do we get info on events?

Yes scuba, I am going on vacation, but I plan to go to the "store", next weekend. I just wanted to experiment with something easy. I went to another store on west road trenton, and they really screwed me yesterday. They old me a pipe organ, but they told me it was a star polyp. It was very beautiful. It looks great in my tank, but yesterday it was a very unhappy coral. I am trying to get rid of it. It is a difficult coral to keep, and I am a beginner. I don't think that is a good idea for me to try to keep a nearly impossible coral. I was really embarrassed when I found out what it was. Hey what do you guys feed your coral??? Any kind of photoplankton or anything???

I just tried some phytoplankton for the first time this week. I'll let you know if i see a difference in the health of my corals, as well as any negative changes to water quality. I also tried spiking the shrimp i feed my bta's with some. Going anywhere cool on vacation? I'm gonna have to make some friends in the new neighborhood fast so i can train them how to take care of my tank when i go on vacation! Did you ask the LFS if they'd take the pipe organ back?

No I called and they said it is a star polyp and I am wrong. I KNOW that I am not wrong. It is very happy today. It is sitting nderneath my water return, so I don't break it. It is about 4 inches from the glass top. However my temp is a little higher them it likes. Every polyps is open today, it is the prettiest coral. Each seperate polyp is a red tube, with a white flower with feathery pedals, and a bright green center. They look like little flowers flowing in the current.
I have a boat. So we are going to st. clare shores, Lexington, port huron, and bayfield.
We will be gone for a week. it will be a nice trip. Sitting in the sun, with a cocktail, looking out on the sun set on the river.
