im in the process of setting my new saltwater tank. I just put my sand in and its extremely dusty like. should I have tried to sift the sand before putting in? because I didn't, what can I do to get rid of the dust in the water?

Just give it a few days. It'll settle on its own. Then you can start the cycling process.

I'm worried that when fish swim close to the sand it will just keep kicking up dust.

We have all had this "problem". The water will be cloudy for a few days, then it will clear, and not be a problem, even if wrasses and clownfish disturb the sandbed. Don't worry.
