I just bought a 55 gal. tank and I was wondering how many pounds of sand should i put into it. Also is it ok to mix reg. sand with live sand? Will the reg. sand eventually become living? I'm new to this so please bear with me. Thanx for any input.

On a 55 gallon, and mind you this is my own personal OPINION. I would use about 80 pounds thus giving you aproximatly 1 1/2 to 2 inches of sand on the bottom. Thats enough.

I would use 120 - 150 pounds.

here is what you will need far as how many pounds of sand you want and how many inch's it will give you in a 55 gallon tank.
6'' sb = 180 lbs
5'' sb = 150 lbs
4'' sb = 120 lbs
3'' sb = 90 lbs
2'' sb = 60 lbs
IMO i wouldnt go any less then 3'' or 4''
