I have hear of people using sand other than southdown. Does anyone have one brand names that they can share or is any playsnad OK?

So booya how's the tank doing?
I use play sand with CC on top plus crushed oyster shells in my sump/refug. No huge algae blooms.

The brands I have heard mentioned are Southdown/Old Castle and Yard Right. The important thing is to make sure that any sand you use is aragonite sand...
If you are willing to order online, you might try Pure Aragonite . It's bagged dry aragonite sand like Southdown and Yard Right.

Good glad to hear it. My refug/sump was a real challenge. Be sure you test it throughly. Now I don't trust my system. but lotsa folks here can help.

basically yes and no. the media in the sump will have to build up bacteria just like the existing filtration did. Best to run both for awhile. Or move the filter media to the sump.
