Sandbeds........How Deep?

Hello all,
Im assuming that when people talk about shallow sandbeds they are talking 2" or less and when talking about deep sandbeds they are refering to 2" or greater.
Is this assumption correct?
What are the 'pros' and 'cons' to each depth of sandbed?
Cheers

I believe that Bang Guy has said that a shallow sand bed is under an inch (this is what I have) and a deep sand bed is over 3 inches. In between these two is when problems may arise, at least that is my understanding.
Bang Guy if I am wrong on this please correct me.

4 inches or more DSB control nitrates and i have always had 0 in my tank. I think they are good to have.

personnaly I would lose the goby. and keep the DSB.
but if you want him your going to want a shallower sand bed, if anoxic zones begin to form (and they will) and he disturbs them your going to expirience spikes etc. in a sand bed that deep with him in there basicly you would expirience perpetual hiccoughs in your tank parameters keeping your whole sytem slightly out of whack at all times.
dont forget they get quite large so i hope he is in a big tank.

sorry to hijack last question
what should the depth be for sand sifting critters such as my goby
and is a remote dsb like say 6" deep in a small fuge would it be any benifit
like a 1'x1' area

I'd like to know too. This thread is exactly where my poll "consensus on lava rock" went!

The depth alone does not determine whether it is a deep or shallow sand bed. Size of sand particles, depth, and macro-fauna determine the type of sand bed and method needed to maintain.
These are all shallow sand beds, particle sizes and depths
Sugar: up to one inch
Fine: up to three inches
Coarse: up to five inches
Deep sand beds are something different. The macro-fauna circulate water keeping it healthy and in balance. This allows for more depth giving more filtration. Now if the wrong macro-fauna is used or the macro-fauna die so does the tank.
A shallow sand bed is designed so that it will not crash if you keep the detritus from clogging the sand.
In both deep and shallow sand beds it is the areas of water having no oxygen that potentially makes the system crash.

i don't think the tank will crash with a 1" sand bed. sugar sized and finer sand is not going to hold alot of detrius.
i think a DSB needs to be atleast 4 inches.
