Ive heard both sides to using silica sand.
1.) Dont use it will cause an increase of algae blooms
2.) Its okay to use b/c hell, the glass tank is silica based, so it wont hurt at all.
As far as pool sand, i havent heard anyone using it but do a search on this board to see if anyone has.

I've heard some good things about "Quikcrete" playsand and I think it's available nationwide at Home Depot. The silica debate continues of course, but I must say, using the argument that "glass contains silica" is comparing apples to oranges IMO, it was brought up in a thread where somebody was questioning the wisdom of using silicone as a sealent.

I used about 130lbs of Quikcrete Kiddie Play Sand in my tank. It has been a few months now, and no problems.
Check my weblink for pictures of how the sand looks. I topped the bed off with 20lbs of Live Sand.

Good Question!
Can you use the QuickCrete sand for mixing????
I just bought some (for mixing) was VERY lite, lighter than the play sand. Can you use that stuff???
Sorry if I am intruding on your post, but there are some good intelligent responses here, and I think we have the same question!
