I'm not going to even mention the best record in the NBA. Of course, we also all know that if they'd gotten their butts in gear during last year's regular season and had home court in the playoffs, they'd be back to back champs right now. Keep in mind that during last year, the Larry Brown circus was a major distraction and they still went to game 7 against the spurs.
Now they have a better coach with a better offensive scheme. They have a better bench too. Miami is overrated and they are not going to be as good as last year. San Antonia is a little better and I'm sure we'll see them in the finals.
I'm sure everone agrees so no need to discuss this. I just wanted to start the celebration a little early.

Lol, no offense taken. I'm not advocating WW3, I'm just stating that it already started...

Dont start celebrating yet, and dont make excuses about why they lost last year. I hate it when people make excuses. Spurs will beat the pistons again.

Too early in the season to determine based on injuries, etc .
Also, you have a head coach with a POOR record regarding the playoffs. If you still had Larry Brown at the helm I would give you a good chance.
With Flip Saunders at the helm I 'll predict Detroit will not even make it to the NBA finals. He has yet to prove he can get a team to the NBA finals. he may rack up some victories in the regular season...but we all know his playoff record. Previous to coaching the Twolves I believe he spent 8 or 9 years in the CBA.

Until such time he proves he has an understanding of the NBA second season and what it takes to get a team to the NBA finals...I'll stand by my prediction...they will not be the NBA eastern conference champs.
Great coaches can get teams with lesser talent to the finals......poor to average or just good coaches can prevent it. Saunders is a preventer...until proven otherwise.

A coach is only as good as his players. So many examples of this. Larry Brown was never considered the "best coach in the game" until he came to detroit and won a championship. Look at the struggles Phil Jackson is having with a lesser team in LA.
Who's going to beat them in the east? Miami is overrated with a bunch of selfish players and there is no way Shaq can stay healthy for the entire season and playoffs. Indiana is a pretender with the headcase Artest predicting championships. Who else is worthwhile in the east? Philly? Milwaukee? Washington? Chicago? Cleveland?... these are the second tier of playoff teams.

.
No doubt you need players to win a chanpionship..but you also need coaching. Both are dependent not interdependent. However, coaching can sometimes be a difference maker....or it can be the reason for a team with overall better talent not advancing.
As I stated, Flip Saunders has yet to prove he can win on a regular basis in the second NBA season.
Again, Flip has an overall playoff reord of 17-30. For a few years the TWolves under his leasdership could not even win a series, as I recall.
To some extent, coaching decisions on player utilization an input on talent evaluation also plays a part. Certainly Flip has the nucleus of a proven championship team.....but does he know what to do with it when the second season starts?........time will tell.
Also, in case you did not hear Artest wants to be traded.

I heard about Artest today. There really is no legitimate threat in the east. Miami was better last year with only 1 premadonna... now they have 3.
I actually think Flip is an upgrade at coach. Detroit had a problem last year with scoring droughts. Flip brings a better offensive scheme. His teams in Minnesota simply weren't as good as LA, Sacremento and the Spurs during his previous years. Honestly, has Sprewell and Cassell ever won anything?
Spurs and Dallas will be tough in the west.... Kings???? Yah right! The finals will be decided by home court (like it generally is) and detroit seems more focused this season. I'll make sure I bring up this thread in June...

Excuse me? WHAT!!!!!???? He had the team with the best record in the NBA 2 years ago........They dominated. 58 wins 24 losses, 8 of which were in the first month of November. After November they went 49-16.
Yeah, he never coached a well oiled team at all........know what you are talking about before you open your mouth.

I actually believe it was the best record in the west but I am not certain it was the best overall that year in the NBA...I've not checked but I do recall the record and the W-L is correct as well as having at least the best in the conference.
Either way he had based on W-L the best team in the conference and still could not advance to the nba finals.
I'm not saying he will not do so in Detroit..I am saying unless you have a proven coach that has advanced to the finals...a victory celebration is premature.
In many sports the team with the best W-L regaular season record does not always win the championship or advance to same.
Coaching sometimes can make the diffrence as I have prviously stated.
Prior to Flip becoming the head coach with teh T Wolves, I beleive he had an extended career in the CBA.
Teams are hot/cold throughout the year...so way too early to tell based on this stage of the season.
