O'Neal and the Pacers have been talking about their wayward teammate dating to Artest's problems with his temper and flagrant fouls in the 2002-3 season, when he was suspended for a total of 12 games. Artest's return from a 73-game suspension for instigating the brawl last year at the Palace of Auburn Hills was supposed to lift his team.
Instead, he was back in Indiana on Wednesday, while the Pacers' chief executive, Donnie Walsh, fielded trade offers. Pacers officials said they were encouraged by the initial response from interested teams, and Artest's agent, Mark Stevens, said Wednesday that a trade could take place by the weekend.
O'Neal said he had two candidates in mind: his former teammate and best friend, small forward Al Harrington, whom the Pacers traded to Atlanta in 2004, and Sacramento's Bonzi Wells, whom O'Neal said he liked for his defense over the Kings sharpshooter Peja Stojakovic.
