scallops-why difficult?

I having been thinking of adding a scallop to my tank but everything I read says it is difficult...why exactly?
Any advise would be great!

Because they tend to hide in crevices in areas of the tank where direct feeding is impossible. On that note, the have to be fed a constant supply of food. Which people tend to only do at the beginning and then slack off because it becomes troublesome.

From my understanding the amount of food that they need to pass by them can cause problems in a closed system.

Or at least they should be.

I have a flame scollop and it is very difficult to feed and I once knocked down my LR. You see, very two days or so they need to be spot fed with phytoplankon. They are very modile and will often get into places were feeding them is near inpossable. They also have a short life span and will useually only live for about 3 years but I do know a guy who had one live for 4 and a halve years.

I have a flame scallop, I'm considering taking it out i have a strong flow in my 80 RT I think it gets brine shrimp daily but it's getting tough to even spot feed it with a dripper since it wedged itself in a tough cave to get to...If it does die (I'm planning on taking it out this week) would this cause my Nitrates/Ammonia to spike from a small flame scallop ?

Yes, but in an otherwise stable tank a water change should prevent any serious harm. I know because I tried two when I fish got into swf as they are quite attractive, but one lasted two days, the other about 2 months. As others have indicated, it is near impossible to meet their nutritional needs in a closed environment without have tremendouys nitrogen problems.
