Schooling fish

If I were to get some Green Chromis, what is the minimum, 3? Also I read the Fire fish Goby does good in 3s as well, is true with what some of you have experienced?
I am trying to decide on the fish for my 40 Gal, and want to make the right decisions.
So far there will be:
1 Clown
1 Royal Gramma
1 yellow tail damsel
there is plenty of room to swim and also plenty of hiding places as well for about 3 more fish.

He can also rock your other fish.
Awhile back I purchased 4 chromis and from what I can tell they killed each other off until there was 1. I guy was tearing down his tank and I got 8 more chromis (year later) for 15 bucks and all 9 live in harmony now. Go figure.
My yellow tail damsel was mean for a few days and simmered down. I think they are one of the least aggressive of the damsels if you are going to keep one. The 9 chromis do make a really nice school in my 90 though.

In my exp. the firefish will group into mates. i had 3 orange and 2 purples. when they were introduced they all schooled together. then eventually broke off in to sub groups of orange and purple and then the orange ones kicked out the weakest one and that guy eventually jumped out of the tank.
my .02 is just get an even # of firefish.

IMO Green Chromis should be in a group of at least 6.
I'm a fan of Blue-Eyed Cardinals if you're looking for a shoaling fish.

I guess I should add a "why?" to my thoughts on Chromis.
Green Chromis have an interesting hierarchy among the shoal. They have an alpha male and two or more Beta females, all other fish are lower on the hierarchy (and ungendered) than these three fish. The Male will continually harass the Females to prevent them from becomming a dominant male. If there is only one female she will most likely perish from the persistent harassment. The females will continually harass the ungendered fish to prevent them from becoming female. If there is only one or two ungendered Chromis they will receive constant harassment so there really needs to be more fish to spread out the attention of the females.
