Learned how to dive in NY off the coast of Long Island and have dove here, in Cozumel, Key Largo and St Lucia. Cozumel was by far the best that I've seen. Key Largo was just OK, not great by any means. I've heard from friends that have been there that Bonaire is great although my best bud is a dive master who's been to both and he said that Cozumel blew Bonaire out of the water.

Do the Caribbean and Cozumel before you do Florida. Much better from what I've seen and heard from talking to other divers

In my opinion, Florida isn't really that great, unless you go to the Keys. In most places, the water is pretty low vis.
Not saying it's like that everywhere...just in the few places I've been to.

I dove Pennecamp National Park in Key Largo about 12 years ago and while the visibility was great there wasnt a whole lot of life to see when compared to Coz... Plus, Coz should be way cheaper to travel to than Florida. I did a week long dive trip in Cozumel about 8 years ago and I think I paid about $1300 for airfare and a week at an all inclusive resort that included all meals, drinks and 2 boat dives a day for 7 days.

My two favorite places are Venesuela and La Jolla Ca. I go to La Jolla quite frequently. I live in ND and got my certification in Lake Sakakawea...basically you cant see anything, and its terrifying. lol. So Its always nice when I can get to any coast and get my scuba on...dowsnt happen very often. My DREAM has always been the great reef, or south africa. People call me nuts but I would really love to do a Caged shark Dive, with very experianced divers of course. I think they are just awesome creatures. It really is sad that we know more about space than our oceans...

Where are you staying in St Lucia? Whatever you do, you absolutely MUST get down to the south end of the island. Most of the big resorts are on the north end and it is the most developed. The south end is still almost entirely rainforest with a bunch of smaller resorts tucked in all over the place. It is much more beautiful than the north end which is more desert like. I went there on my honeymoon 2.5 years ago and spent 3 nights at a place called Ladera on the south end and then 4 nights at a Sandals on the north end. The south end blows away the north. Rainforests, great beaches and the Piton mountains, which are just amazing to see.

VERY NICE place! It is on the south end of the Island. The place I stayed, Ladera, is up in the mountains on a cliffside and does not have its own beach so they have a deal with Anse Chastanet where Ladera guests can use the beach at Anse. Awesome looking place.
If you're looking for something interesting to do other than the beach and snorkeling there are a bunch of great rain forest hikes in that area as well as Sulphur Springs, an active hot springvolcano that you can drive into and walk around. It was pretty cool..

not a scuba diver, but I love to see pictures of dives that people have been on...my physical therapist showed me some photos of a dive he took in Hawaii where he had a neat encounter with a 6 foot white tipped reef shark, he was diving near a shelf that the shark called home.

I'd have to bust them out of a photo album and scan them. Dont have a digital underwater camera!
