I have taken one or two pieces that are like golf ball sized that were broken off already smashing around in the current. I feel like I saved its life rather than killed something. But as a general rule I would say don't. 15 years in jail for a piece of golf ball sized coral is not worth it.

I have taken fish, inverts, anemones, and such over the years. But coral is a HUGE no-no for me. The reefs around Florida are diminishing. That is a fact that I have personally seen over the last 30 years. No sense in helping that downfall.
