It's a gear driven reflector, the best way to desribe it as far as I can figure out. You do need to filter the water going into it as they seem somewhat easy to jam if a particle of something gets into the gears or mechanism. I've had mine since the beginning of the year, the only thing I did'nt like at first is it switches every 10 seconds, but I'm getting used to it. I made my last wavemaker out of a micro switch and a 1 RPM timing motor going to 2 powerheads, so it switched every 30 seconds, which I liked better.
