Sea Clone 150 in sump

I have a 90 gal Oceanic with a 20gal sump. I bought a Sea Clone 150 to utilize as a protein skimmer.
Keep in mind I have only been doing this for about 6 months :D
So, here is my question(s):
I put the 150 in the sump as stated in the directions and it seems to be working....but I have two issues. The first is that the water must fall such a distance that is splashes a little (which will cause salt buildup everywhere, etc). The second is that I keep reading that the skimmer doesnt need to be in the water more than 3-4 inches. If this is the case then I will have to set it on something in the sump?????
The Tech support was useless.....I knew more than this guy (an that is bad...haha!!).
I have read that you can cut a sponge around the outlet, build a ramp, etc.....to cut down on splash.
Any Opinions?
I know that this isnt the best skimmer on the market, but it fits my budget right now (after spending a lot of $$ on the tank, lights, etc,etc,etc,etc,etc....and so on....haha!!).
thanks!!!

I know nothing about this skimmer but I would bet that the 3-4 inches is a min water level not the max... As long as the water level is not higher that the outlet I would think you would be fine... Maybe someone with experience with the Sea Clone will chime.

It is a HO Skimmer, and I wouldn't recommend it at all, let alone in a sump. I bought one when I first set up my tank to save a couple of dollars, and now regret it. I'm currently in process of setting up a sump, and purchased a Euro-reef ES8-2. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT skimp on the skimmer. You'll thank yourself later! ;)

bonkuba-I have just had the same problem as you. I posted a couple of questions in the Equipment section. You can do a search for Which skimmer? or by name Stump. Hondo gives some good advice in here. You are right you do need to elevate the skimmer so only 3 or so inches are in the water. To stop the splashing you could put a rock underneath of the water, or you could have the outflow directly on to the glass. Does that make sense? I have been using it as a hanging skimmer for the past two years. I am also getting ready to go over to sump. The skimmer has done fine for me. Then again it is the only one I have had. Hondo seems to like his and he put a picture up of his sump on that thread.HTH

I like my Sea Clone too! I am always emptying the cup of the attractive green goopy water, so I know it is doing a good job. If it did a better job I'm a fraid I would be emptying it several times a day!

Thnaks for the replies everyone. I will go search and see if I can find the piece you are talking about.
As far as putting the 150 in sump. The directions say it can be used in Sump and even give directions to do so. The setup is easy.....the 150 itself just seems a little tall.......and splashes (just a little....but enought to be annoying). I am thinking of a sponge or maybe a rock as previously suggested.
Any other suggestions are appreciated!!!
Thanks!!

bonkuba-
I don't have the instructions anymore. Does it say anything that I may need to know?
Thanks-

HOB Hang on Back. I always assumed this was the big tube which ran from the powerhead down to the intake nozzle. I could be wrong, but I believe this is right. HTH

i have my seaclone in the sump and so far its working fine, as far as the water i think the 3-4" thing is the minimun because my water level is just below the output on mine.

WOW!!! Isnt the 150 like 27 inches tall?? I mean mine is pretty tall.....so you ust have a deeeeeeeeep sump :D
I have put a sponge under it (the one that came with the sump.....basially stood it up straight and it stays). This is only temp until I can get to my LFS....which is in Oklahoma City (since I live in the little town of Ardmore OK.......85 miles from OKC).
I guess a sponge from say Auto Zone is out due to possible chemicals right?
Thanks and take care everyone!!

i don't beleive its that tall but i use a 50 gal tank for my sump, with the collection cup on it just makes it to the top of tank. the return flow is actually alot lower than that.
