I just purchased a Sea Clone 100 skimmer for my 37gal today. Anyone have any ideas how long the break-in period on these are?

When I first set my tank up it ran for about 2 weeks and got nothing at all, then after my tank cycled I started to add fish and inverts and it started to work after that. Now I am trying to find a happy medium between foam and micro bubbles in the tank.
And just as a side note my seaclone seems to really foam up after I feed a frozen cube of brine shrimp for about 6 hours.
Take this info with a grain of salt because I am by no means an expert and my tank is only about 5 weeks old.
I also started at 1.5 turns open from fully closed and now I am at 1 turn open trying to stop the micro bubbles....

IMHO and this is just my opinion, its best to shut off theskimmer when feeding frozen foods. A lot of what foams up and gets removed by skimmer after feeding frozen consists of lots and lots of micro nutrients, which are most benefical to lots of filter feeders, so why waste it. I know once I starated to shut off my skimmer even for a short period of time after feeding any frozen foods, a lot of my filter feeders and corals started to look a lot different. No sense pulling it out and letting it get rank in the collection cup when critters could have utilized it.

Wow, that makes since. And I understand what you are saying because I have seen it. But how long do you leave it off for? Or is the skimmer something that should only be run every other day or so?
Hope we are not hijacking this thread but it is related.

I let mine off for about 30 to 45 minutes when feeding. YOu can pretty well tell after watching some corals ball up or close and then open up or worms pulling in and out of their tubes etc. Use that as a guide but 30 to 45 should be plenty. Other than that the skimmer IMHO shold be left on 24/7...that is unless your adding some chemicals etc, as often times it too makes em go crazy. In that case I let em off for an hour or so and then turn it onand see what happens.

Not a problem, one of the first posts answered the question I had. I can't say that I mind a hijack when it's one where everyone will learn something

My went two weeks. When I got it adjusted right I marked the valve with white out so I knew where the sweat spot was.I have yet had to readjust it. I get super dark waste in the cup.I clean the whole skimmer once a month.

Mona.....I did not mean to sound so negative, with my first reply to yoour question, but overall the mahjority of oflks that initially buy a seaclown are looking for another skimmer very shortly thereafter as they find the clones are always going out of adjustment, are very fussy when it comes to water levels (sump mounted with constant close level is best ) and in general they do not do anywhere as good of a job as skimmers that cost as much or even less do.....such as the coralife super skimmer or the air driven Lee's. I have a few Lee skimmers and also a Sanders (all air driven) that I fool with and the Lee's do work fine as long as you keep the limewood air block clean........There is mods that canbe done to the Seaclones that improve their performance, so yu may want to look into those mods....

I may just do that. I'm really surprised, but my Sea Clone has already started to pull skimmage. I did a big water change and equipment cleaning this morning, and I had all the equipment turned off during that time. Got finished, adjusted the skimmer to where I thought it looked like it might work, and an hour later the darn thing is working great!! Yay!!

if u cant get rid of micro bubbles, try putting a small peice of cotton gauze or something where the return water flow is with a rubber band. i did this and my sea clone is working great, and no microbubbles since. be careful however when doing this, if you put too much gauze there water could start overflowing the sides of the return part of the skimmer causing leakage to the flow.
just food for thought

Thanks for that little tidbit, I may try that later...after I give this skimmer an adequate break in period. So far though, mine is pulling all kinds of stuff and seems to be working fine. Yeah, there are some micro-bubbles, but that's been expected...in my experience I expect that to continue for about 2-3 weeks. I'll keep my eye on this thread and keep you all updated.
So far though, my Sea Clone 100 seems to be going through the normal break in as any other skimmer would need...
more later.

So far my SeaClone 100 is working great...no, better than great!! My water is back to being crystal clear and the darn thing is pulling junk like nobody's business!! Me and my SW critters are all very happy campers!! I'm really hoping that I won't need to make the modifications mentioned, but if I do, I'll definitely post what I do and the outcome.
