just wondering if anyone has or has kept a weedy or leafy sea dragon? if so how difficult are they, was thinking they would be the same as sea horses as far as tank setup, but wondering how hardy they are, thanks

Hi,
I keep seahorses.. But only tank raised. They are very harty and robust. The SH tank is the ONLY tank i havent had a problem with. BUT That seahare is awesome looking!
When you get more info.. please post it.
www.seahors.org is a great site but i dont remember seeing anything on the seahare..
Thanking you kindly, Kim

after doing some more reseach ive found some people that say they are endangered and you cant have them, and others say that there is certain types that can be kept. so i trying to find out what the real deal is with these things. my lfs said he can get them from time to time and said they could be hard to keep, he said to put them in a well established sea horse tank. they are a little on the pricey side so before i get involed gonna do a little more reading, let you guys know if i come across anything good

Find out an exact species and look the up on the red list. some people can get stuff their not supposed to get. if ya know what I mean .
there are some species that are not on the list that is legal to for the trade industry but are close to being restrictes also. I think kudas where just listed early this year or late last year so its always changing. also I have never seen the seadragons that are CB so if it were me I would stay away from them. if they arent being CB yet that probably means that there isnt much if any success in keeping them long term.
let us know though I intersted in knowing.

I read somewhere they need a least 55 degree water. The divers that where photgraphers freezing their tails off.

The fact that the Leafy Sea Dragons price tags are well into the thousands might keep hobbiests away as well.
Many times they are only available for aquariums where they are "rented". Aquariums make a Sea Dragon display and will keep the dragons for a month or two and then pass them onto the next city............amazing creature.

They are definately endangered. They come from Australia where I live and do live in the cold water down south. Very beutiful but I havenever heard of them being in the aquarium trade. I used to find dead ones on the beach when I was a kid on holiday. At my local public Aquarium they have a diplay with about 20 in a huge tank. Its very hard to tell what was a sea dragon and what was seaweed lol.

They have those guys at the Seattle aquarium.. from what i remeber they paid in the neighborhood of $10,000 for them and are one of only a few places in the U.S. that has them., They are endangered and you couldnt even use flash photography in the room they are in.. very cool, they were suprisingly large also., i'd say we all have no chance of ever owning one

From what I know they need cool water and a large tank. Thousands of gallons. I think this is another reason that they arent in the aquarium trade. I read somewhere that someone is trying to breed them in captivity. Once this happens, then the price will go down and they may become available.
