yes they realease a red/purple ink when there threatened lucky for my the one that was in the power head didnt do that till i pulled it out. and i have also heard that they are toxic if they die and are not removed right away
I had one for a while in my reef tank and someone ate him, i was pissed but nothing happened, no toxic stuff and no die, i think my flame angel or coral beauty ate him, i hate when that happens, i think they just ate my flame scallop, and 1 emerald crab is missing a claw.
i found two of these in carolina at the beach. one died of water quality (don't ask) and another was hurt from washing up on shore. i couldn't save the second one and it let out purple nasty stuff when it was 'bleeding' and it made the water sickning. so definatly be careful not to get them sucked into a powerhead or anything cause they will cause issues.

but be careful of them near power heads thats how i lost mine
and it sucks (no pun intended) I had to fight my powerhead to release the sea hare and that was gross After pulling it out I threw out the powerhead it had no cover (came from a used tank) THen realized the hare was to big to flush so I had to wrap it and dump it Could have down that while it was stuck in the powerhead
