I am looking to start a sea horse aquarium but instead of having it just corals hermis & the sea horse(s) I want to have at least two other breeds of fish in the tank. Most, I know, are not compatible with sea horses. I hvent been able to finda book on sea horses & what kind of fish are compatible..so if anyone knows where I could find a book ORwhich is more preferred..if there is a sea horse expert out there or someone who has a sa horse tank & knows this kind of info...could u please repy with the needed info..Thnx so much guys..later:notsure:

Welcome to the forum. Are you new to fish-keeping or just to SWF.com? Just wanted to make sure since a seahorse tank is not for beginners.

Seahorses are best keep alone as others already pointed out. Please only buy captive bred if you decide to get them. Read a lot before you buy anything. Seahorses are sensitive creatures and mistakes that beginners often make will kill them.

When keeping seahorses, you must be very dedicated to their care, and tank...there are issues with other fish in a seahorse tank...mainly, the seahorse is a slow and deliberate eater...it wont just lunge after food like a fish.. This is where the compatability issues come in. I have kept seahorses with a yellowtail damsel...the damsel gave no care about the seahorse's, but did care about the food...so i fed the damsel first, and he generally left the seahorse's alone. You have to be very careful.

But if you have captive bred seahorses, you shouldn't add pipefish.

There is a really neat book that I got at borders... all about seahorses The author is Frank indiviglio, and excellent little book! There is a chapter on seahorse companions. However, the writer states that adding any tank mates to a seahorse tank should always be with caution and monitored closely. Gobies are sugested because of their feeding habits, the gobies is less likely to compete with seahorses for food. Ofcourse there are always eceptions... so watch tank mates closely. Banded coral shrimps, Hermit crabs, Starfish, brittle stars, and sea urchins.
These are the best tanks mates mentioned by the book, however, as they said always watch interaction and make sure the seahorses are getting enough to eat, and tank mates are stealing their food.
Hope this helps
