I leave that one up to Bronco, he's the dwarf horse specialist. However, Pipe fish are not a good tank buddy. They swim faster and will eat all the food before the seahorses have a chance!

No, no, no, not my intent at ALL!! Just trying to emphasize the amount of research needed to keep these little guys and how different it is from keeping, say a reef. I would never discourage anyone with a true interest!!
Sorry if I came off that way.

dwarf seahorses would be just great in a 9 gallon, mine are in a 10, pipes are probably not good like ryk said, i would really leaves dwarve seahorses to themselves as they are not only slow, but TINY...they dont need more people to compete with.

lets say I do a pipefish tank then. They are alot more readily found around here, and I've always enjoyed them. Could they do well in a smaller tank with say, a clown goby (1)?

This is my favorite:Multibanded Pipefish
(Doryrhamphus multiannulatus)
Quick Stats
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
Care Level: Expert Only
Tank Conditions: 72-78°F; sg 1.020-1.025; pH 8.1-8.4; dKH 8-12
Max. Size In Aquarium: Up to 7"
Color Form: Red, Yellow
Temperament: Peaceful
Reef Compatible: Yes
Diet: Carnivore
Compatibility: View Chart
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Family: Syngnathidae
The Multibanded Pipefish is also referred to as the Multibar Pipefish. It is a long sleek fish, with a body shape similar to that of an eel. It is white in color with many vertical thin red bands. The long mouth of these fish is yellow and red in color. The oval-shaped tail is a striking red and is fringed in white.
The Multibanded Pipefish is difficult to keep in an aquarium and should be kept with other pipefish and seahorses in a separate species-only aquarium that is 30 gallons or larger with multiple caves and overhangs. It will not harm ornamental invertebrates in a reef setting. DO NOT HOUSE it with invertebrates with stinging tentacles (most corals and anemones), because they can harm it. The Multibanded Pipefish reacts poorly when harassed by other more aggressive fish such as blennies, wrasses, tobies, triggerfish, and porcupinefish

I have to agree here. I'm still in the process of researching seahorses and learning what I need to meet their needs. I don't know any thing about pipefish (yet).

rykna, i literally just got off here and found that exact article almost. I was looking at the black and white banded ones though. I was thinking about putting one in my 29g reef, I know its not recommended, but the tankmates are all very docile bottom dwellers. So maybe... I'll do some research and I'll find out.

Just a gentle reminder, pipefish are not captive bred (please correct me if anyone has other info) and can carry diseases that will wipe out your established seahorse tank.
To consider seahorses and pipefish a natural as tankmates could be a fatal mistake, guys. Research others who keep the two together. Their needs are similar, but dig deeper than that.
The seahorse board that we all hope for may be like cycling a tank...be patient
