I've never kept seahorses, but I have done a fair amount of research. That is my biggest advice to you. Do a lot of research before you decided to setup a seahorse tank. They are rather "special needs." They need a setup that is fairly different from a normal fish tank. Also, there are fish that can be kept with them, but the choices are limited. Seahorses are methodical eaters, so any active fish will always out-compete your horses, and the horses will starve to death. So, you need to get fish that are fairly passive and totally none aggressive. The fish needs to either also be methodical in eating (such as mandarins) or eat a different kind of food than the seahorses. As to the types of seahorses, I'll leave that to people who have had experience with them.

Seahorses should only be kept with other seahorses, and pipefish. they really should be kept is species only tanks.
PLEASE visit the site searhorses.org. They are very knowlegdable and very helpful. I hve done ALOT of research on these creatures. I have decided to set my tank up in the fall. They require ALOT of work. They need to be fed alot. Also do a search for seahorses. I have a post titles Killafins. In that post he gave me alot of good information. Also he has post about seahorses that I found extremely helpful. Seahorses require alot of attention and alot of research. I am not trying to scare you away from keeping them, but you need to know what you are getting into. You also should keep captive bred seahorses and not wildbred. Your lfs usually doesn't not have WB seahorses. They cost a ton of money to feed. Someone broke it down for me, and I was amazed. Let us know if you have any other questions. Seahorses need perfect water, and other needs that you need to be aware of before keeping them.

Leaf fish are compatible. but it is best for seahorses to be in a species only tank. the simple act of a fish swimming near a sea horse is enough to scare him so bad he won't eat and will slowly starve to death. I was going to get a seahorse myself but their care level is so difficult that I decided against it. also they will only eat live food. there are some cases where they will eat frozen but only while it is falling. once it reaches the bottom of the tank they will NOT eat it. They also do best in low light conditions.
Give it some serious thought before getting a seahorse.

Mandarins will compete with the horses for food I believe. Both fish require a lot of live food. Maybe if you had a BIG fuge to breed a ton of pods in or about 200 lbs of LR. That would probably work.

Seahorses will eat live food or frozen food. It is best if u train them to eat frozen and usually they only way to do so is by buying them captive bred, which means that they are tank raised and indeed have been trained to eat frozen. If you get wild, there is ways to train them to eat frozen but it takes time.
I have seen seahorses eat things off of the ground, they will do it if they are trained to recognize it as food.
Mandarins are fantastic play mates for seahorses. They both are slow eaters and will leave eachother alone. I'm not saying all blennies are, but mandarins are.

Please do your research first before attempting seahorses. They should definately be in a species only. They require a TALL tank because they love to swim up. Especially if you get a male and female. They do courting dances in the morning and will only do so if they can swim across the tank and up. They require a mild current as they are not strong swimmers. We have two wild caught Kuda's. It took them 3 months to be trained to eat PE Mysis shrimp (soaked in vitamins). They initially don't recognize it as food. Once they do, they will eat it off rocks and the ground if it rests there. They both, however, will still hunt all day for copepods. Therefore, even though a mandarin is a good passive fish to add, it will compete for food.
If you can, try to get tank raised, especially if you are a beginner! I can't say enough times.....DO YOUR RESEARCH. Seahorse.org is a good place to start. Seahorses are prone to many diseases and if recognized and caught early...they can be helped.

IF you have the requirements for a mandarin than having a mandarin and seahorse will be fine

OK I HAVE BROKEN A LOT OF RULES. I HAVE 2 SEAHORSES IN WITH
1 YELLOW TANG
1 BLUE HIPPO TANG
4 CHROMIS
1 SPOTTED SWEETLIPS
1 FALSE PERCULA
2 ENGINEER GOBYS
AND THE SEAHORSES ARE DOIN GREAT. THE DO LOVE TO GET IN THE POWERHEAD THOUGH AND "RIDE" THE WAVE I GUESS YOU COULD SAY. THEY ARE VERY ACTIVE AND ARE CONSTANTLY SWIMMIN AROUND. I WILL SAY I HAVE BEEN LUCKY BUT IT IS POSSIBLE TO KEEP THEM WITH OTHER FISH.

Me to I have broken a rule or 2 but I keep a Great White in a 55 with 3 tuna and they all get along great I thought sharky would have eaten one of the tuna but they play in the powerheads like they have been best friends forever,it is really cool!

IF you are going to excplain ur mistakes explain in order to correct others not to preach. Seahorses cannot be kept with other animals, even those that are said to be okay shouldnt' be kept with them. Hence how my seahorse died.
