Sea horses

Now i am not an expert nor have i kept ponies before. I kinda had an idea to set up a 20g long i have...id really like to only have seahorses, and nothing else...some stuff for them to hang onto and thats about it...theres no powerhead in the 20g, just a aquamarine 20 filter which i have thought about a easy modification and make it a mini refugium. I could even silicone a chamber inside the 20g too for a refuge...anyways...how hard is it to bread the horses...ive read that they spread like rabbits...any advice before i take this one off.

Hi Superman! If your intention is to breed seahorses, you need a taller tank. Your 20 long will be like an army cot on a honeymoon for a mating pair and success may be unlikely. The tank should be at least 2X the height of the horses, 3X would be better. They rise (float, in fact) during the mating and hitting the top would interfere.
Generally speaking, the seahorses are easy to breed....however raising the fry is another story. Research that carefully. As a matter of fact, seahorse keeping is more complex than can be answered in one small post. Just google "seahorse" and start reading. You can stop reading and start keeping them when the phrase "evacuate the male seahorses pouch" doesn't make you flinch!
I kept two females and have never been dissappointed in that decision. They hung around together, used each other for hitching posts. Very fun to watch.
Best of luck!

And, I just noticed your avatar and the words under your name. Now when I read your post, it comes out with an Austrian accent and the words "no problemo" appear after every sentence!
Can you say C-a-l-i-f-o-r-n-i-a?
Sorry, couldn't resist!

Hi I have the dwarves, yes they breed freely and 20 gallon is pretty big for them. Because they only eat live brine shrimp, the food would get lost or sucked up the filter...which leads me to another problem about dwarves, they will go right up the filter. You need to get a filter sock and rubber band it around any openings in the intake. You can do it, but just get about 10 or so, after a while they will know when you feed them and if you can get a turkey baster even better, that way you can squirt the food down in the bottom of the tank and they will learn when it's feeding time. You need to get a brine shrimp hatchery, these you can get on the auction site. They will start to pick at other things, mine pick at frozen foods that I feed my hermits. NO CORALS or BRITTLESTARS. Corals that sting are a no no for seahorses and brittles will eat the young seahorses. Good tank mates for dwarves are snails, hermits, mushrooms, sponges and anything that they can hang onto without being stung. Hope this helps.

yes thank you that helps alot...it is actually YOUR dawrves that made me want to get them. I saw some of your pictures somewhere on these forums...as far as a sock to go over the intake...right now i cut a peice of plastic screen material (like on screen doors) and cemented it onto the intake of the filter...this should be good. would any slow moving fish be ok? so far i think im only going to get like 20 or so snails, like 5 hermits, of course ill throw in some mushroom, but as far as hitching posts...im going to get those twigs like you have...but like i said im no expert...im mainly just copying yours haha

Hummm, I don't know about the fish, because they are so small, you will have to do some research on that. I would guess as long as the fish are not carnivous it would be ok. Those little guys move sooooo slow, even during feeding time. They kinda check out the food for a long time before they strike..like a snake. Good luck with them and let me know, when you get them. Acclimation is kinda tricky cause of their size, I used a plastic measuring cup to acclimate mine, my male was popping out babies when I got them in the mail...I freaked, I almost cried cause they were so cute.

Tonga branch works good for hitching posts, if the pieces are small enough. I wouldn't put any fish in w/dwarves. Maybe w/bigger horses, but not dwarves.

Seahorses move slowly, eat slowly. They will probably be unable to compete for food. Remember, the brine will be live and also moving. The dwarves can hunt and chase the live brine, but not with competetion.
I don't have dwarves, I have larger genus horses. They eat frozen foods and I know it is difficult enough to make sure they get enough food without the complication of the food being able to move!
SWLover, I'd love to see a photo your dwarf tank! We don't see many around here...
